Today is the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City. Unlike previous primaries in the city that never sleeps, the world is intently watching this one. In a world that’s splitting apart at the seams, trendsetting New York is about to show us what’s possible. Will we let the next generation take the wheel and try fundamentally different things? Or will we stay on the privileged Baby Boomer path to hell?

The race has already shown us how to engage younger voters, many of whom were undoubtedly among the 90 million who didn’t vote in the 2024 presidential election.

Although there are plenty of candidates, the real race is between Zohran Mamdani and (I can’t even believe I have to type this) Andrew Cuomo. For those who haven’t been following the race closely, Mamdani is a 33-year-old member of the New York State Assembly from Queens. He’s a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America.

I know…I said the scary word socialist. Given the crisis the country is in, perhaps we can suspend our indoctrination and open our minds to something new. Mkay? Great.

A candidate of Indian descent, Mamdani is also a Muslim. Born in Uganda, he’s the son of an academic and a filmmaker. His mom is Mira Nair, the creative behind Mississippi Masala and Monsoon Wedding.
